If you’re looking to find humpback whales, some of the best scuba diving in North America, colourful starfish, pods of orcas, or stunning sunset views, you’ve come to the right spot.
The first time I stumbled upon Neck Point, it absolutely blew me away!
Plus, it helped that I saw a pod of 9 killer whales just beyond the rocks that day. You bet I was jumping up and down like a giddy little school girl!
On top of that, mom and I ran into a sweet lady recently who said she sat eating her breakfast and enjoying the spectacular view of humpback whales slapping their tales on the water’s surface for about an hour and a half one morning!
I swear sometimes it’s like I’m in a dream!
What I love about Neck Point is that there are so many things to do. From hiking through the woods to relaxing on the beach, enjoying a picnic lunch, watching the sunset, searching for starfish, watching for whales, I mean the list just keeps going on! I’ll share some tips below to help you get the most out of your Neck Point trip!
If you’re heading to Nanaimo anytime soon, be sure to add this to your adventure list. Trust me, you’ll be happy that you did!
Here’s a few photos from our recent adventures:
TIPS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR VISIT
Wear comfy shoes or even better, 5 finger toe shoes if you have them! Honestly, there’s so many rocks to play on here that it will make you feel like a kid again.
Bring a hammock and a picnic basket full of goodies. If you follow the trail to the top, there are a few really nice spots to set up your hammock and watch the sunset on. (I’m just saying, it’s a great date night idea – hint hint!)
Bring your camera! I’m sure I don’t have to say this but honestly, you don’t want to forget it for this trip! Even better, have it ready to go on something like Program Mode to make sure you can catch those spontaneous shots! If you’d like to learn more on camera modes, check out this post here!
Wear your swim suit! There are a few spots here that might tempt you to take a dip. Just be aware that you are swimming in the Salish Sea so do be careful. Oh, and don’t forget a towel.
Watch the tide!
This peninsula is super fun to hike out to. Just be aware of the tides because at high-tide, this path to the outcrop of rocks almost completely disappears! (This is where I saw the pod of 9 orca’s by the way – so keep your eyes open!)
If you go at low tide, be sure to look for starfish! Just a little hint, we found some on the left hand side of Neck Point’s outcrop shown in the photo above.
You must make it out to the boardwalk! Be sure to check where this is on the map because this spot offers some really spectacular views! I took the photo above from this awesome spot.
If you follow the trail to the top (you’ll know when you’re there because that’s where the trail ends) keep an eye out for little otters and sea lions. I’ve lost count of how many buddies I’ve seen here now.
NECK POINT FAQ’S
How long is the drive to get there?
From downtown Nanaimo, it’s about an 18 minute drive. Nope, I’m not kidding, it’s really that close!
How long is the hike?
From the parking lot to the boardwalk is about a 5-10 minute walk. Honestly though, there are so many trails that you could easily spend hours here. So bring lots of water and goodies, because nobody likes a cranky hiker! Also, it’s quite an easy walk. We had a little 2-year-old with us the other day and this little trooper did awesome!
Is it considered an accessible area?
Some of it, yes. There are multiple trail systems here and I’ve seen many baby carriages on them. Some areas do have stairs but there are other trails to get out to the same point. Have a peek at the maps once you arrive, as there’s quite a few on the trails. I’ve attached a link to a map here as well.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! The trail is dog friendly but watch for signs at the beach noting what time of year to keep your furry friends off the beach. Also, there are trash cans scattered throughout the park so you don’t have to carry the business bag for long at all.
Are there washrooms?
Yes, there is an outhouse near the parking lot.
Can I swim here?
Yes, you sure can! Just be aware that you’re swimming in the Salish Sea so be very cautious of the waves and currents. The map in the link above also shows suggested swimming areas.
Is there scuba diving here?
You be there is! Some of the best in North America!
Are there picnic tables?
Yes there sure are, and the accessible ones are noted on the map above as well.
Can I ride my bike here?
Yes you can ride on the trails, just be cautious of those around you as always – lot’s of little kiddies excited to show their parents the little tiny crab they found on the beach!
