My favourite time of year is here! Not just because my birthday happens to fall on the first day of Autumn, but also because of the incredible colors that come to life and allow for some creative fall photography ideas to shine through!
Sometimes it may feel like fall is so brief that it’s difficult to capture on camera.
Well not this year!
This year, I’m sharing 6 Creative Fall Photography Ideas that will have you taking amazing and memorable Autumn photos today!
Let’s jump right in!
1. USE THAT PHONE!
Honestly though. You take it everywhere with you anyway. Why not take it out to snap that pic of your dog romping through the leaves as you’re walking him this morning?
To help you get that creative shot, try getting low to the ground with some leaves showing in the foreground.
Once you’re low to the ground, tap your screen on your dog romping in the distance and the phone will focus on your dog, making the foreground slightly blurry, giving you that beautiful bokeh effect.
You’re welcome!
2. APPLY COLOR THEORY!
Using color theory is one easy peasy way to create more memorable photos and fall is the best time to it!
The reason why is because this time of year, nature is full of color schemes like analogous, complementary and monochromatic. We are naturally attracted to these color schemes that compliment each other.
To help you better understand color theory, check out this blog post: How to Create More Powerful Photos Using Color Theory.
Check out this foggy autumn morning where I captured my husband walking off into the distance. Notice the blue water and orange morning light? See how they naturally look good together?
Well, that’s because Blue and Orange are complementary colors!
Another complementary color scene that you can keep an eye out for in the fall is green and red. Have a look for some fallen maple leaves with some green ferns in the forest. They look great together. Check out the romping dog photo above and you’ll see what I mean!
3. FINALLY GET THAT SUNSET SHOT
During the summer, the sun rises so early in the morning and sometimes doesn’t go down until after 10pm here in the Pacific Northwest.
This makes it tough to get those spectacular sunrise or sunset shots.
Luckily, fall isn’t the same. Here’s an example I recently captured:
This is my absolute favourite time of year to capture sunsets because the sun goes down at 7pm. So, after dinner, we typically find ourselves going for a walk at our favourite spot. Because the sun goes down so early, we’re more often than not treated to a spectacular sunset as well.
The main point here is that if you time your evening walks well, you’ll likely be able to experience the golden hour during the fall.
4. LOOK AT MORE THAN JUST TREES
The number one thing everyone thinks about when capturing fall photos is leaves. Well, here’s a creative idea that will have you capturing something much more interesting than the typical fall photo.
Check out the colors on the rocks in this beautiful cave we visited a few weeks ago. Yes, that’s me in the shot, I had to do it to show a sense of scale. This cave was massive!
The point here is when you’re out and about, look at other things that might have changed color as well, like the lichen on the rocks in the photo above.
5. LOOK DOWN
Sometimes the most beautiful leaves are the ones that have fallen. While you’re on your journey, don’t forget to look down and actually see what your path looks like.
6. DRESS UP AND GO!
No matter the weather, get out there!
Doing this has resulted in some of the most memorable photos in my portfolio, especially after the rain. Check out this post to find out more on how to make your photos stand out: 10 Tips to Make Your Landscape Photos Stand Out.
The ominous clouds and saturated color of the leaves just adds that vibrancy to the photo that you just can’t replicate if you didn’t brave the weather.
